Is Pigeon Forge Walkable? How to Get Around the Parkway and Attraction

Blog Home : Category Posts : Is Pigeon Forge Walkable? How to Get Around the Parkway and Attraction

Pigeon Forge is one of the most popular destinations year-round for families for good reason. From exciting attractions like Dollywood to the Smoky Mountains, there's no shortage of options. Before you can start having fun, it's important to know the city's layout. Is Pigeon Forge walkable? What does getting around in Pigeon Forge look like? With our help, you'll understand what getting around in Pigeon Forge really looks like so you can plan your trip with confidence.

Is Pigeon Forge Walkable? The Short Answer

In short, Pigeon Forge is walkable but with conditions. You can certainly explore the city on foot via sidewalks and crosswalks. Additionally, many attractions on the Parkway are close to each other. It's only a short walk from Wonderworks to the Titanic Museum, for example.

In reality, most visitors drive between areas, then park and explore those attractions on foot. Let's explore how to make that work for you and your guests.

Why Most Visitors Still Drive in Pigeon Forge

However, while some attractions are near each other, walking isn't always a good idea. The Parkway spans miles, and there's more to see in Pigeon Forge than just what's on the Parkway. For example, while walking all the way to Dollywood from Teaster Lane is technically doable, it's by no means practical when trying to have fun during your vacation.

Additionally, the city has dozens of traffic lights, which makes walking take longer, since you'll be waiting on the crosswalks. Finally, some days in Pigeon Forge (especially in July-August) are too hot to feel comfortable walking everywhere.

So, do you need a car in Pigeon Forge? For these reasons and your personal preferences, the answer is a resounding yes, especially if you want to explore multiple areas in a single day.

Walkable Areas in Pigeon Forge

Just because getting around in Pigeon Forge requires transportation at times doesn't mean there aren't areas that are fully walkable. The key is to plan the day's adventures in walkable attraction clusters that let you arrive, park the car, and explore everything before returning to your cabin rental for the night.

The Island in Pigeon Forge

If there is one area in Pigeon Forge that's a blast on foot, it's the Island in Pigeon Forge. This attraction is basically an entertainment district that offers a wide selection of:

  • Shops
  • Activities
  • Attractions
  • Restaurants

One moment, you're in line waiting to ride the Big Wheel. The next moment? You're finding the cutest souvenirs to take home in one of the shops.

The best part? You can park the car in one of the lots and have the tram pick you up and bring you to the center of the action. Upon arrival, let your feet take you to what grabs your attention.

Bonus Tip: The Island is close to other attractions, so if you don't feel like getting back in the car immediately, it may be possible to reach a few nearby attractions on foot.

Dollywood

Without question, this theme park is one of the most famous attractions in Pigeon Forge. It's also completely walkable once you've arrived. After making it into the park, everything is reachable on foot. Whether you want to hit all the rollercoasters, watch the glassblowers, or eat all the food while grabbing Dollywood shirts, it's all within reach.

In fact, depending on crowd size and how fast you and your group move, it's technically possible to lap the entire park twice in one day.

While driving to Dollywood is necessary, you can keep your drive time to an absolute minimum with a stay in a cabin rental near Dollywood. In just minutes, you'll be at the front gates.

Tanger Outlets

Technically, this area is just past the boundary between Pigeon Forge and Sevierville, but you won't even notice that when you see everything that makes Tanger Outlets a must-add to your travel plans.

The reason for this? Tanger Outlets is an outdoor shopping center that lets everyone park once and walk to whatever store has the deals they've been wanting. Some popular stores available include:

  • Nike
  • Coach
  • Old Navy
  • UnderArmour
  • Kate Spade New York

Even better, there are restaurants and entertainment options like Xperia: Ocean Journey within Tanger Outlets, ensuring the whole family can make a day of things in one of the best outdoor malls in the region.

Old Mill Square and Patriot Park

Another fun area to hit the ground running is Old Mill Square and Patriot Park. As the name implies, you'll find plenty of things to do in the park area, but the real draw of this part of the city is how many restaurants, shops, and walking areas are connected to the greenway.

Other Ways to Get Around Pigeon Forge

Did you know there are ways to get around the city besides your own vehicle or on foot? Well, you do now. Over the last 20 years, Pigeon Forge transportation options have grown by leaps and bounds, making it easier than ever to be where you want to be in Pigeon Forge.

Pigeon Forge Trolley

For those moments you don't feel confident navigating around the Smokies or simply don't want to drive, the Pigeon Forge Trolley is an excellent solution. The trolley system includes several routes:

  • North Parkway: Leaves Patriot Park and travels north into a portion of Sevierville. One of the main stops is around Governor's Crossing.
  • South Parkway: Leaves Patriot Park and travels east to Teaster Lane and then north to Jake Thomas, with a stop at the LeConte Convention Center. This one sticks closer to the Parkway but explores the rest of Pigeon Forge as well.
  • Gatlinburg Welcome Center: Leaves Patriot Park and travels non-stop to Gatlinburg Welcome Center just outside of Gatlinburg.
  • Dollywood: Leaves Patriot Park and travels to and from Dollywood continuously. Begins 30 minutes before Dollywood opens and in the evening until everyone is returned to Patriot Park.

Walking Trails and the Pigeon Forge Greenway

For those who are more outdoorsy or athletic, the Pigeon Forge Greenway is a wonderful part of the city. Upon arrival, you'll find plenty of walking and biking trails, letting you explore at your convenience without dealing with heavy traffic like in other parts of Pigeon Forge.

The Best Way to Explore Pigeon Forge

To enjoy the best experience when exploring Pigeon Forge, you'll want to follow the drive, park, and walk travel pattern. Find where you need to drive to, identify where to park, and then explore on foot everything in the vicinity.

Once you're done playing at your chosen location, it's time to drive to the next fun thing to do in Pigeon Forge and repeat the process. With one of our many Pigeon Forge cabin rentals, you'll enjoy a home base that's close enough to reduce the drive but separate enough to catch your breath when not playing.

Where Staying Near Pigeon Forge Attractions Can Help

It's an open secret that there's always a place to stay in Pigeon Forge, but did you know there are ways to stay close to Pigeon Forge attractions to optimize your vacation plans?
